When the going gets tough, the tough PIVOT!!

LATLC is a “pass-through” charity: what we raise, is what we give away.  The primary fundraisers that let LATLC provide annual grants to our partner charities, college scholarships, youth sports funds, and signature events like “Comfort & Joy” and the “Great Tryke Giveaway,” were our Casino Nights and Golf Tournaments.

It was clear that 2020 was going to be a fundraising year like no other.  The COVID-19 pandemic meant no in-person fundraisers.  However, LATLC wasn’t going to just walk away from our commitments and goals. With a little creativity – and the generosity of our supporters — LATLC never skipped a beat.

TRIBUTE BOOK:

LATLC was about to celebrate our 15th Anniversary. By publishing a “Tribute Book” with our history and impact on the community, and with the help of so many advertisers, LATLC raised enough to fund $253,000 in direct grants to existing partners.

You can read the Tribute Book online or call the office (844-44-LATLC) and we will send you a copy of the beautiful book.

VIRTUAL FUNDRAISERS:

With schools, business meetings, and even depositions moving to online platforms, we found a way to support our mission – virtually!

POKER TOURNAMENTS:

Since LATLC was not able to hold an in-person “Casino Night and Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament,” we decided to try a VIRTUAL Poker Tournament, specifically to raise funds for College Scholarships.  Our first virtual poker event was so successful, we did not provide the usual 10 scholarships, but were able to give out TWELVE scholarships ($2,500 each) to deserving high school seniors.

The second tournament raised more than $50,000 and provided toys, groceries, and household items for south L.A. families during the holidays. The true meaning of “Comfort and Joy.”

LATLC held a third one in early 2021, and again raised enough for 17 college scholarships for students.

OPPORTUNITY DRAWINGS:

During the last virtual Poker Tournament, LATLC held an opportunity drawing for a trip to Maui.  Three hundred tickets were sold, with the winner selected during the tournament party. Another “non-traditional” fundraiser was born!

In 2022, board member Bradley Wallace donated two VIP tickets to the Super Bowl!  Of course, we held a very successful opportunity drawing, with the winner announced LIVE on Instagram and Zoom.

More drawings have been planned – including a romantic vacation to Maui, with the winner announced…on Valentine’s Day!
