Gary Fields Fields ADR Bio

Gary Fields is an AV rated trial lawyer who began practicing law in 1977. Over the past 40 years, he has handled well over $1 billion dollars in litigation. He has litigated cases on behalf of plaintiffs and defendants in areas as diverse as catastrophic personal injuries, toxic torts, construction accidents and defect, employment law, medical malpractice, professional liability in many areas, business disputes, pharmaceutical litigation, bad faith and mobile home park disputes. He has tried to verdict in excess of 60 jury trials and has represented clients not only in California, but also in Hawaii, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona and Arkansas.

In 2002, Gary attended the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University and regularly attends classes to continue to keep up to date on the latest mediation techniques and issues. Every case is unique and over the past 15 years, Gary has facilitated the resolution of over 500 cases in Southern and Northern California. Gary was an active member of the Los Angeles County ADR panel of mediators while it was in existence and still serves on the Orange County panel of mediators.

Gary will take the time and exert the energy necessary to help get a case settled so that all sides to a mediation feel that they have won by avoiding a trial. Gary is skilled at bringing factions together. With his years of business and legal experience handling a wide spectrum of cases, Gary is able to provide creative suggestions that meet all parties' requirements, while offering solutions when others give up. Gary is also effective in defusing emotions and getting the parties back to trying to resolve the dispute.

Parties who have had mediations with Gary have commented:

"I wanted to share with you my excellent mediation experience with Gary Fields. The case involved a 28 year old gentleman whose foot was crushed in an industrial machine. The man is now a Symes amputee. The case was a products case with many challenges including employer negligence for failure to use a lock out/tag out procedure and a real issue in identification of the machine's manufacturers--since it had passed through a few owners and had some parts replaced over the years. After several years of litigation and a prior mediation with another mediator, Gary was able to get the case settled. One thing I liked about Gary is that he has done both Plaintiff and insurance defense work. I think this helps him relate to both sides. For us, Gary wouldn't allow the Defendants to begin with a real low ball offer. He also helped us understand some of the issues the other attorneys may be facing with their adjusters---drawing from his past experiences in similar situations. Helping us understand this process allowed communication to stay open and for things to get done. He also didn't allow either side to play the dollar per dollar move game. I'd use Gary again and recommend that you throw his name onto a list the next time you're asked who to mediate with."

"Going in, I did not believe the matter would be resolved at mediation. The Mediator, however, did an outstanding job and accomplished what I thought could not be accomplished. I never thought this case would settle. That it did, is a tribute to the mediator."

"Mr. Fields was very patient and worked hard to resolve a tough case."

"Mr. Fields made the process informative & enjoyable. The setting was comfortable. The mediator was pleasant, knowledgeable & quite competent. I would recommend him and would return on other cases. A+ !!"

"There are a lot of great mediators to choose from and we hear the same names mentioned often. I settled 2 separate cases with Gary Fields recently. In both cases they did not resolve at the Mediation. In both cases he hounded the defense for weeks until he got me the numbers I required. He is a mediator who should be on everyone's short list."

"Here's 2 thumbs up for mediator Gary Fields, who worked relentlessly for weeks by telephone, after a bad mediation session, to get a case settled on surprisingly good terms. He refused to quit. I am now a fan, and will use him any time I can. He didn't even charge anything for all the extra work!"

"I spent Monday mediating a case with Gary Fields (Long Beach) against an auto manufacturer in an accelerator case. Because of the odd facts and the somewhat polarized positions, frankly, I was doubtful that mediation would be fruitful. Honestly, he worked really hard and got the case resolved for more money than I thought we'd achieve. I'd highly recommend him."

Gary graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with an A.B. degree in Political Science in 1973. He also graduated with distinction in scholarship and Phi Beta Kappa. He then attended Southwestern University School of Law where he was on Law Review and graduated in 1976. While in law school, he served as a law clerk with the District Attorney's Office and the District Court of Appeal.

Not only has Gary practiced law for the past 40 years, but he was one of the founders of the Westerly School of Long Beach, a non-profit independent school; the President of Media Technology; and on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Long Beach Symphony, Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Center of Long Beach.
